Project overview

The context behind Labas.

Labas was built to make buying, selling, and trading easier than ever in Libya. Whether someone is searching for a car, renting a home, listing a job, or offering a service — Labas brings it all together in one simple, mobile-first experience. It’s more than just a classifieds app. Labas is a complete digital marketplace built for real people, real needs, and real opportunities — giving users across Libya a modern, trusted way to connect and transact, anytime and anywhere.

Creating a super app for classifieds in an emerging digital market like Libya meant solving a number of important challenges: Local Infrastructure & Payments: We needed to support Libyan payment gateways and handle transactions securely and smoothly. Real-Time Communication: In-app messaging had to be fast and reliable to support active buyer-seller conversations. Geo-Targeting Listings: Users needed a way to find listings nearby using accurate, location-based filtering. User Trust & Safety: With an open marketplace model, ensuring user verification and platform credibility was essential. Wide Category Support: From jobs to electronics to real estate — the app needed to scale across diverse listing types, each with its own logic and filters.

We approached Labas with a clear goal: make it simple, fast, and local-first: Built Natively in Kotlin: Developed a smooth, responsive Android experience tailored to the region's devices and users. Backend with Node.js & MongoDB: Created a flexible, scalable REST API that powers everything from listing creation to real-time search. Location-Based Features: Integrated GPS-powered tools so users can discover nearby items or services effortlessly. Real-Time Chat via Socket.io: Enabled seamless in-app messaging, so users can connect and negotiate without needing third-party apps. Local Payment Gateway Integration: Connected trusted Libyan payment systems to allow safe and easy transactions. Custom Filters & Categories: Built smart search and filter tools to help users quickly narrow down listings that matter most. User Verification & Safety Features: Added profile checks, trust scores, and moderation tools to keep the platform reliable for everyone.
